Our immigrant ancestors were born in Nicosia, Catania (now Enna province) Sicily.
Rosario Messina: born Oct. 1882 was the son of Giuseppa Raspanti and Salvatore Messina.
Rosario was a contadino (farm worker) in Nicosia, (he tended the goats on the hillside near San Salvatore Church) and then a construction worker in Chicago. He arrived in NYC in 1905 aboard the “Napolitan Prince”, and settled in Chicago.
Santa Projetto (Proietto): born Mar.1887 was the daughter of Provvidenza LiVolsi and Santo Projetto. Santa arrived in Ellis Island in 1906, aboard “Nord America”. She worked as a seamstress in Chicago.
Rosario and Santa were married at Santa Maria Incoronata Church in Chicago, July 1909. They had 7 children… One hundred ten years after their wedding day their descendants total over 100!
